Formed in 1916, the Chartered Institute of Housing is the professional body for the housing sector. A not-for-profit organisation with education at the core of its charitable status, activities include lobbying, conferences and professional training. Its work is governed by Royal Charter and Byelaws, granted in 1984.

Terrie Alafat has been CE of the Chartered Institute of Housing since April 2015. Formerly director of housing at DCLG, she joined the civil service from local government in 2003 after a career in housing and social services policy. Before moving to the UK she was involved in educational research in Chicago schools.
