Scarborough Borough Council has invested £15million into the brand new Sports Village. The new facility boasts an impressive 25-metre, eight lane Olympic Legacy swimming pool, a four-court sports hall, a multi-activity room, a state-of-the-art 60-station fitness suite and a community football stadium with 3G pitch. The new facility is also home to Scarborough Athletic Football Club.
Former Olympic athlete and Everyone Active Sporting Champions ambassador, Colin Jackson, officially marked the opening of Scarborough’s new Sports Village, with an action-packed free family fun day. The event took place on Saturday 10th June, with more than 3,000 people turning out for the celebration. Activities on offer included free personal training sessions, virtual group exercise classes, dance classes, a bouncy castle and face painting. Local football fanatics also tested out their skills in a penalty shoot-out and a ‘beat the keeper’ challenge, led by Scarborough Athletic FC on the brand new football pitch.
Everyone Active were awarded the contract with Scarborough Borough Council back in October 2015 as part of a ten-year partnership. The partnership also includes the management of Whitby Leisure Centre and Pindar Leisure Centre on behalf of the council.
Martin Russell, Everyone Active’s Area Contract Fitness Manager, said: “We were delighted to see so many people turn out to enjoy the day. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase all of the impressive facilities on offer at the new Scarborough Sports Village.
“We are extremely proud to manage this new centre and we look forward to encouraging more of the local community to improve their health and wellbeing through the extensive facilities now on offer all under one roof.”
Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council said: “It was a privilege to celebrate the grand opening of Scarborough Sports Village, a stunning facility that everyone should be extremely proud of.
“My sincere thanks go to all those who helped us deliver the project, including the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund via Sport England, developer Wrenbridge, construction contractor Willmott Dixon, operator Everyone Active, football, swimming and sports clubs, local residents, staff from across the council and my fellow councillors who took the ambitious decisions needed to drive the project forward. The fantastic achievement marks the start of a brand new era for sports and leisure in Scarborough and a big step forward in improving the health and well-being of our local community.”
