The Homes and Communities Agency’s (HCA’s) Amelia Lawson was crowned the winner of the Diversity Champion Award for Housing Sector at the national Excellence in Diversity Awards 2017, which took place in Manchester last night.
The award recognises Amelia as an individual who has shown outstanding initiative to promote diversity internally and externally, making a positive difference in other’s lives through significant contributions to social justice, equality and diversity.
An executive assistant based in the HCA’s Gateshead office, Amelia has worked tirelessly to help the HCA develop inclusive workplaces for its employees, primarily through her role as chair of the Agency’s Build Together Friends network.
Launched in October 2016, Build Together Friends is the HCA’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Allies network for staff who don’t necessarily identify as LGBT, but who support LGBT issues.
The Agency’s Build Together Network for LGBT colleagues was also shortlisted for an award at last night’s ceremony.
HCA chief executive officer, Nick Walkley, said: “We are really proud of our Build Together and Build Together Friends networks, who are leading the way in championing equality and diversity issues in our industry.
“For both the Built Together network and Amelia to have been shortlisted from over 1,000 nominations is a tremendous achievement in itself and we’re so pleased that the hard work Amelia has put in to establish the Build Together Friends network has been externally recognised with this award”.
