Homes England has selected Urban Splash to deliver its first new homes at the new town of Northstowe, Cambridgeshire.
Urban Splash will create 406 homes in the centre of Northstowe, all of which will be built using MMC (Modern Methods of Construction), which involves using products and methods that require prefabrication and off-site assembly, with the aim of producing better quality homes quicker than traditional building methods.
The development, located around six miles from Cambridge, will be one of the largest MMC sites in the country, with all homes constructed off site at Urban Splash’s factory in Alfreton, Derbyshire.
The announcement comes after news broke last week that Japan’s biggest housebuilder, Sekisui House, has taken a 35% equity stake in Urban Splash’s modular business, representing a multi-million pound deal that could potentially mean thousands of new homes being built across England.
Commenting on this latest development, Stephen Kinsella, executive director, Land at Homes England, said: “We’re pleased to have Urban Splash join us at Northstowe and look forward to working with them on the next steps for the development as they seek to secure planning permission.”
Nathan Cornish, director at Urban Splash, added: “We are thrilled to be working in Cambridge, a new place for Urban Splash, but one that’s already on the map for interesting and pioneering housing design.
“Our plans are to make well designed, modular Housing more widely available and we are delighted to be working with our long-term partners Homes England to make this happen in Cambridge.”
Georgina Bignold, director at Proctor & Matthews, with whom Urban Splash will be working to deliver the new homes, also commented on the development: “The design for the new town quarter of Northstowe will create a unique interpretation of a traditional fenland village inspired by the archaeology and rich history of the area,” she said.
“We are looking forward to working with Urban Splash and Homes England to deliver the new homes using innovative off-site volumetric construction technologies providing homes to suit a range of 21st century needs and lifestyles and creating a diverse intergenerational community.”
Homes England is leading a long-term project to deliver 8,500 new homes in the centre of Northstowe new town by 2040.
It’s anticipated that work will begin on the 406 Urban Splash homes in spring 2020.
