Extra care housing for older people is to be built in Saughall Massie, Wirral.

Alpha Living, a housing association specialising in providing housing and services to help people live independently in later life, has won planning permission to build 60 one-bed and 18 two-bed apartments on a site near Woodpecker Close – with many of the homes being wheelchair accessible.

The apartments will offer 24-hour care and support services on site and will enable older people to live independently for longer.

Estimates show a 32% increase in the number of older people in Wirral over the next 15 years. The number of over 85s in this group is expected to increase from 5% to 20%.

Graeme Foster, Chief Executive of Alpha Living, said: “Alpha is committed to providing dedicated and sensitive housing for older people. We currently provide more than 460 apartments across Wirral as we aim to make sure that local people have access to accommodation that meets their needs.

“We believe that this development will bring huge benefits to the area where we know there is a big demand for this type of accommodation.”

The development will provide facilities which can be utilised by local residents. There will be a large bistro on site and a hair salon both of which will be open to the public.

Work on site is scheduled to start in the first half of 2019, with the development due to be completed by July 2020.
