Volunteers at a community garden in Speke are delighted with their new kitchen that was donated by local organisation, Avela Home Service.

The South Liverpool-based repairs and maintenance company transformed the inside of a converted cargo container at community garden, Grow Speke – installing brand new vinyl flooring, cupboards and work surfaces.

Avela Home Service was delighted to support this community project that has transformed derelict land into a thriving space where residents can enjoy community-led events and try their hand at gardening.  Located on Ganworth Road, Grow Speke is managed by Groundwork in partnership with South Liverpool Homes and run with the help of a team of volunteers.  The new kitchen means that they will have a fully functioning space that can be used for catering and events.

Brendan Cassin, Project Manager at Grow Speke said: “The new kitchen has already started to make a huge difference to the volunteers and community groups who regularly use the garden.  We have local schools who come along to learn about wildlife and pick their own fruit, vegetables and herbs. Now they will have somewhere to wash and prepare these items and extend their hands-on learning even further.

“We can’t thank Avela Home Service enough for helping us out with this,” continued Brendan. “It will definitely make life a bit easier for the volunteers over the busy summer months.”

Gerard McEvoy, Head of Avela Home Service said: “We are committed to creating opportunities for the local community in which we work and are thrilled to be able to support this fantastic project in Speke.”

“We have a close relationship with local residents, providing repairs and maintenance to over 3,700 homes in the area, and we’re delighted that we’ve been able to do our bit by installing a much-needed kitchen for this fabulous community facility.”

As well as gifting the new kitchen, Avela Home Service also installed gutters to the polytunnel at Grow Speke. These new gutters will help to make the site more eco-friendly by harvesting rainwater to water plants on the site.

The installations have been made just in time for the opening of Grow Speke’s new apiary and bee keeping project which will be launching this summer.
