A contractor has been appointed to deliver the next phase of a multi-million pound social housing development in Salford.
Housing association Salix Homes has appointed Rochdale-based Casey to deliver Phases Three and Four of the Poets development in Swinton.
The first two phases of the £22million scheme, delivered by Galliford Try Partnerships, are now nearing completion with 22 new social homes now built and occupied, and a further 48 homes due for completion this summer.
The 160-home development is the first new build project by Salix Homes. A mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes are being built in the area, which is also known as Beechfarm, replacing 146 properties that are being demolished, due to structural issues caused by historic mining.
Of the new properties, 120 will be social housing, while the remainder will be homes for sale or shared ownership – with the first six properties on Shakespeare Road already going on sale.
The development is being carried out in phases in order to minimise disruption to residents. Casey is expected to start work on Phases Three and Four this June, where a further 86 properties will be demolished, and 90 new homes built in their place, on Stevenson Road, Tennyson Road, Kingsley Road, Wordsworth Road and Blantyre Street.

“At a time when social and affordable housing is in such short supply, we’re very proud this development is not only providing a long-term solution to the subsidence-hit properties, but is also increasing housing choice in the area, bringing new, modern homes to both people on the social housing register and aspiring homeowners.

Salix Homes has also been working alongside partner contractor Jackson and Jackson to deliver a £400,000 environmental project across the wider community, which has seen more than 300 existing properties benefit from new gates and fencing.
The entire development is expected to be completed by February 2021
