Members of our Community Involvement Team are now qualified teachers of Dementia Friends training and are helping to train others to recognise the symptoms.
Rykneld Homes is part of the Chesterfield Dementia Action Alliance and has delivered dementia awareness training to most of its staff. Being able to recognise if a customer or resident has the condition helps us adjust our services to meet their needs.
Our Community Involvement Team visited a local housing scheme to deliver training to residents who have agreed to become Dementia Friends out in the community.
One of the residents said: “I thought the training gave us some really good information and it’s good to encourage discussion about dementia.”
Rykneld was one of the first housing providers in the country to deliver this training to all staff. We recognise that making a few simple changes within an organisation can make a big difference to someone living with dementia.
Research has found that where more people understand the condition, there is less fear and avoidance, and people living with it are included and supported to live independently for longer.
The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia.
