The continued partnership will see Everyone Active managing the Watford Woodside and Watford Central leisure centres, as well the Woodside Stadium, for another 15 years. Both centres are recognised as Excellent by Sport England’s leading national quality scheme Quest. The new contract will commence on 7 June 2018.
The partnership first began in 2008, and the two organisations have since worked closely to improve the health and wellbeing of the local community through increased physical activity. Over 12 million visits have been made to the centres during the past decade, and every week more than 4,000 people participate in the sites’ award-winning Learn to Swim programmes.
Millions of pounds have been invested during the partnership to improve and upgrade the centres. As part of the new agreement, Everyone Active will continue this investment and ensure people can enjoy the council’s state-of-the-art facilities for an affordable price.
The partnership has also brought a diverse range of sporting opportunities to the borough. The centres have hosted everything from Tang Su Doo World Championships to sports days for local schools. Most recently, Watford Woodside held a hockey festival with Olympic gold medallist, Alex Danson, to engage more than 300 school children in the sport.
Deputy Mayor Cllr Peter Taylor, whose portfolio includes the council’s leisure partnerships, said: “Everyone Active is a fantastic partner, providing facilities that are as good as the private health clubs, but at an affordable price. Free swimming will be provided at Watford Central Leisure Centre from June 2018, which we hope will encourage people to lead a more active lifestyle. This is an excellent deal for everyone who uses our leisure centres and for local council tax payers.”
Duncan Jefford, Everyone Active’s regional director, said: “We are thrilled to have extended our partnership with Watford Borough Council. Our mission is to get more people active across local communities nationwide, and we’re looking forward to continuing to work with the council to reach this.”
“I’m very proud of what’s been achieved across the course of our contract so far; both centres are fantastic community activity hubs, and I am excited to see them progress over the next 15 years.”
